Those Wonderful Bears

Did you know that Anchorage’s residents also include about 350 black bears and 65 brown (grizzly) bears? The city is surrounded on all sides by bear habitat and they often visit the city of Anchorage due to its many parks and wooded areas. Statewide, there are about 100,000 black bears and 30,000 grizzlies. Come find out more about the life of Alaska’s bears.

The Great Alaskan Earthquake

Lasting 4 minutes and 38 seconds, the magnitude 9.2 earthquake in 1964 is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in North America and the second most powerful earthquake in world history. When a 600-mile length of fault ruptured simultaneously and moved 60 feet, there was widespread destruction in Anchorage and tsunamis which affected people and property spanning from California to Japan. This film shows the impact of the earthquake and the challenges of the recovery. Effects of the earthquake can still be seen in Anchorage. Sign up for the Segway Great Alaskan Earthquake tour and see for yourself.

The Amazing Trail: Celebrating Alaska’s Mushing & Iditarod History

The E Street Theater is nestled in the center of Anchorage’s mushing district. What more ideal location for bringing to life the significant impact of dog mushing in Alaska’s history?  This action-packed film celebrates the rich, exciting and often perilous journeys of mushers and dog teams throughout the centuries.  In the theater lobby, you’ll also see more about mushing in Alaska, including an original dog sled from an early Iditarod race, ideal for a selfie. Outside the theater, the route of the annual Iditarod and the World Championship Sled Dogs races is nearby and you may even meet and talk with a legendary musher who is often in the area.

While you’re in Anchorage, don’t miss the remarkable history and real-life stories about mushing and adventure on the Arctic trail. We look forward to seeing you at E Street Theater!
